How we got our name
The name—Tutor & Spunky’s—came from Tom (“Tutor”) and his wife (“Spunky”). Though life changed, the catchy name and our deli stayed.
Since 1988, a local favorite for handcrafted sandwiches, friendly faces, and community spirit.
In July 1988, original owner Tom Blake decided to trade the corporate grind for a neighborhood deli near his home in Dana Point. He spotted a “for lease” sign at 34135 Pacific Coast Highway, signed that day, and got to work—no blueprints, just heart and hustle.
By December 22, 1988, Tutor & Spunky’s Deli opened its doors with Teresa as its only employee. The name came from the nicknames of Tom (Tutor) and his wife (Spunky). The rest is delicious history.

In March 1989, Rosalinda joined Teresa. Debbie and Sandy soon followed. For 20+ years, their smiles and laughs have welcomed our community.
In 2015, Jim & Shelley Mouzakis took the helm. After decades with UPS, Jim followed a dream back to the community he raised his family in.
On April 1, 2019, Samantha Nguyen and her sister Elena Sik became the third owners. With laughter and fresh ideas, they keep the deli buzzing.
From time to time: Vietnamese coffee, Pho, and Banh Mi. Fresh-made and available while ingredients last.
An ode to the sea and PCH—peek our mini museum of surfing and vintage bicycles in the deli.
